Helen Marie Madosh (Good Heart Woman)

HARVEY — Helen Marie Madosh, 81, of 105 Keweenaw Trail, Harvey, passed away at her home, Tuesday morning, September 3, 2002, following a lengthy illness. Helen was born May 31, 1921 in L’Anse, a daughter of the late William James and Emily (Chosa) Hocking.
She was raised in Baraga and in the late 1930’s married John Mataxagay; and he preceded her in death in 1942. On August 9, 1947, she married Peter Joseph “Mandolin Pete” Madosh and the couple moved to the Marquette area in the early 1950’s and began to establish their home and raise a family.
Helen was a member of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Tribe, the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community Senior Citizens, and St. Christopher Catholic Church. She was noted for her craftwork, which she loved doing, and enjoyed cooking. Her talent at making crafts will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Helen is survived by two sons, James Mataxagay of Grand Rapids and Peter (Marcy) Madosh, Jr of Marquette; three daughters, Doris Mataxagay Doherty, Patricia Madosh Brown, and Margaret Madosh Carlson all of Marquette; fifteen grandchildren, Debbie, Danny, Curtis, Pete, Wendy, Clifford “Sonny”, Gerald, Ross, Carrie, Cindy, Pete, Mathew, and Michael; eighteen great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Nellie LeMaire and niece, Hazel Hulverson both of Marquette; several other nieces and nephews; special friends, Johno Manchester, Roy Peterson, Dawn Alexander, Mary Schofield, Saraphine Bressette, Pat and Paul Zuba, Helen Lindall, Carole Barnette, Vivian Waati, and Georgie Maynard. In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded in death by twin infant sons from her first marriage; husband, John Edward Mataxagay; her husband of almost 52 years, Peter Joseph “Mandolin Pete” Madosh, Sr., on December 29, 1998; a son, Edward Mataxagay in 1954; a sister, Doris Smith on September 3, 1999; and three brothers, Francis, Clifford, and Carlton Hocking.
Friends may call at St. Christopher Catholic Church on Thursday, September 5, beginning at 11:00 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:00 pm Thursday afternoon in the church with Rev. Alexander Sample and Rev. John Hascall OFM Cap. as con-celebrants. Burial will be made in the Holy Cross Cemetery. Helen’s escorts will ne, Matthew Madosh, Michael Madosh, Dan Alexander, Clifford “Sonny” Brown, Keith Ashbrook, Gerald Doherty, Johno Manchester, and James Beaumont. A reception for family and friends will follow in the church fellowship hall. The Fassbender Funeral Home is serving the family.
